WELCOME TO MAUNU SCHOOL

Welcome to Maunu School

Welcome to Maunu School, a contributing primary school for children in Year 0–6, located on the western outskirts of Whangārei in the beautiful suburb of Maunu. Our kura is a U5 contributing school with a long and proud history, first established in 1884. Over many generations we have maintained strong rural values, high expectations, and a deep commitment to providing the very best learning opportunities for our tamariki.

Set amongst spacious grounds and large playing fields, our school is surrounded by historic rock walls that add to the character and uniqueness of our environment. Maunu School is well resourced, with modern learning spaces, a vibrant library, hall, and swimming pool with covered seating that support a wide range of learning and extracurricular opportunities.

At the heart of our school are our Five Feather ValuesResponsibility, Respect, Excellence, Integrity, and Curiosity. These values guide how we learn, how we treat one another, and how we contribute to our community. They provide a strong foundation for developing confident, capable learners who are prepared for their future and motivated to make a positive difference in the world.

Our Strategic Focus

Our strategic priorities are centred on improving outcomes for all ākonga and ensuring every child can thrive at Maunu School. Our focus areas are:

Culture and Identity
We recognise the importance of identity, belonging, and connection. We acknowledge the special place of tangata whenua and honour the rich Māori heritage of our region. At the same time, we celebrate the diversity of cultures within our kura and value the many languages, traditions, and perspectives that enrich our school community.

A Rich and Dynamic Curriculum
We provide a broad and engaging curriculum that encourages curiosity, creativity, and deep thinking. Our programmes are designed to challenge and inspire students while helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for lifelong learning.

Wellbeing
The wellbeing of our students, staff, and community sits at the centre of all we do. We foster an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to take risks in their learning.

Partnership with Our Community

Strong partnerships with our school community are vital to the success of our learners. We value the close relationships we share with whānau and believe that learning is strengthened when schools and families work together.

It is important to us that every family feels a genuine sense of belonging at Maunu School and can see themselves reflected in our values, classrooms, and curriculum. Our diverse community enriches school life and helps create a vibrant environment where every child is respected and celebrated.

Our Board of Trustees, the dedicated Friends and Whānau of Maunu (PTA), and our passionate staff work collaboratively to ensure Maunu School continues to be a place where children receive a high-quality education and truly have the “Freedom to Soar.”
